Ten Scottish women from the fields of the arts, culture, politics, activism and science will once again be honoured and inducted into the esteemed Saltire Society Outstanding Women of Scotland community at a special event held at WOW What Now?, Perth on Saturday 5 October 2019.

Celebrating exceptional women from all walks of life since 2014, the Outstanding Women of Scotland campaign celebrates everything Scotland’s women have achieved, the huge contribution they make to Scotland’s vibrant and diverse cultural life and the inspiration and examples they set for the next generation.  Previous inductees include the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon; singer-songwriter and political activist Annie Lennox; playwright Jo Clifford and Scotland’s Makar Jackie Kay.  

The celebration on 5 October will see each inductee presented with a limited edition print, commissioned from an emerging artist from Edinburgh Printmakers and will culminate with a performance by comedian Lubna Kerr.

Open to fiction and non-fiction books. The First Book award is open to first time authors who have not previously published a book (excluding publication in magazines, newspapers, pamphlets and anthologies). This category is not open to previously published work. When the book is a translated work, it must be the first book by the original author.

Open to collections of poetry by a single author. Poetry collections that contain work from previously published volumes must contain a sufficient number of new poems to qualify. Anthologies and pamphlets are not eligible.

Established in 2016 this award aims to recognise and encourage the work of an individual in the early stages of their publishing career as they develop their skills and experience in the industry.  


The winner will receive a prize of £500.


What are we looking for in the winner?

We would expect the winning applicant to demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • The ability to build good relationships with authors and peers
  • Fresh thinking and imagination
  • Commitment to their own professional development

Criteria

The nominee will provide a no more than 500 word narrative which describes and gives evidence of their professional achievements with particular reference to;

  • Building good relationships with authors and peers  
  • Fresh thinking and imagination
  • Commitment to their own professional development

The Nominee will provide a letter of recommendation from a current or past (no longer than 12 months ago) colleague or employer (including freelance employers). Letters of recommendation will be no longer than 500 words. 

Eligibility

  • Currently working within the publishing industry in Scotland
  • Have worked in the industry for less than 5 years
  • Individuals working in production, editing, marketing, rights, digital publishing, research, literary agents are eligible

Established in 2013, the Saltire Society Publisher of the Year Award is dedicated to encouraging and supporting Scottish publishers.  The Award aims to recognise and promote the work of Scottish publishers as an important element in the ecology of Scottish literature.  


The winner of the Award will receive £1000 to assist their business in its further development. The judges will also have the option to award a commendation.


What are we looking for in the winner?

The award will be given to the company who has the most exciting, progressive and developmental story to tell.  The purpose of the award is to celebrate and support the continued achievements and ambitions of Scottish publishers.


The winning applicant will be distinguished by their strong performance and possess at least three of the following characteristics:

  • Innovation and boldness
  • Strong relationships with authors and readers 
  • Successful and effective business strategy
  • Successfully entering new markets
  • High quality production values

The Saltire Society Publisher of the Year Award 2019 Criteria

  • The main element of your submission will be a no more than 1000 word narrative which describes how you have developed your company and what you have achieved, with particular emphasis on work achieved between April 2017 and August 2019  
  • Five examples of publications in hard copy to be posted to the address below.  Digital publishers are invited to submit 5 examples of electronic publications
  • High resolution JPEG images of ten book covers (including covers of the 5 books submitted in hard copy where applicable)
  • The Saltire Society reserves the right to request additional copies of books submitted in support of Publisher of the Year Award applications

Eligibility

  • Publisher's headquarters must be in Scotland
  • Gaelic publishers and digital only publishers are welcome to enter
